They don't have enough effect on flow that it is worth shortening the guide. He should remove them, port the heads, and put new ones in. With all of the forces that are on the valve, it is foolish to give those forces more leverage. If you aren't looking for a long lasting engine, it will probably work, but I can't imagine those valve guides lasting 100k.
